Hi Barry, The siding is at Cheddleton,it is the road nearest to the main line and it used to stop at the Farmers Crossing. It has been extended by 6 panels approx. 120 yards and is intended to store the 4VEP unit. It smartens the trackside as it hides some of the old but necessary storeage wagons. It will look better when painted as you can see it in the distance from the station. Thomas

Thanks Thomas.
Will be down to take a photo of it when it's all ready.
Just give us the nod when the painting is all done will you?
Cheers.

Can you believe it, 2 jobs finished so far this year by the OAP-Way gang, the diesel road siding and now the road 2 in the shed has been changed from wooden to concrete sleepers and concreted in. Next week I hear that they are changing 20 panels of worn out rail north of Consall to remove the speed restriction. Whats happening are they taking foo-foo pills or perhaps V***** anyhow keep it up, the good work I mean, well done. Thomas

The 20 panels north of Consall have been changed this week but the 5mph speed restriction is still on until some holes have been drilled for the fishplates and some stepped fishplates fitted. The OAP-Way gang are on a roll, I bet some hot baths and early nights have been taken. Thomas

Well it looks like progress on Cheddleton siding, the signal is being made, new (secondhand concrete )sleepers are at Froghall, chairs and fishplates have appeared at Cheddleton.Lets hope it won't be to long before it's in, the weeds between the laid sleepers look as tough its an abandoned track. Thomas.

Have you seen the new!!! permanent way corrigated hut by the side of Cheddleton signal box? I must say it looks in keeping with the 60s image the railway tries to portray. rusting, paint peeling off and dented. I hope we don't have a big storm else it might blow away, but I suppose they need somewhere to have a cup of tea. Thomas.

Today has seen the start of a BIG job on the railway. 8 out of 16 wooden sleeper panels are being replaced with concrete ones. all the panels will be taken out , the bed will be leveled and the concrete sleepers put in place ,all with the help of Norex. The concrete sleepers are 2" thicker than the wooden ones so some bedding and lineing up will have to be done. The job will hopefully be finished on Friday. Thomas.

Sounds like very hard work Thomas.
See you Saturday then :-)
I would lend a hand but I have just finished laying heavy concrete flags in my garden (120 in total) so I think I need a rest!

Well they managed to do 6 panels ( over 150 concrete sleepers ) by Friday but I suppose they are on a learning curve, so Admin there is still time to help out. There is also the finishing of platform 2 at Cheddleton to finish as well, or the Civils have a wall to do at Froghall. Thomas

Well, Almost 10 months later the OAP-WAY are doing the other 8 panels at Podmores Mill the last week in Jan. They are almost certain to require more help after all the're a year older so nows the time. Perhaps Admin has finished laying slabs ,everyones welcome ,I'm even thinking of going myself just to see how they perform.Contact Bob Beaumont if you can spare even a day. You just require safety shoes, gloves and hi-vis. Thomas

Hi Thomas,
Wish I could help.
Still not really finished the slabs and doubt I ever will.
Just don't have the physical nowadays for hard labour at my age.
Would be useless on the P.M. :-(
I could perhaps make the tea though. :-)
Keep up the good work. It's well appreciated by all.

HI, I see that the photograph charter went ahead so it looks as though the panel replacement has been completed. Has anyone been on the track since it's been done and has the speed restriction been lifted? Looking forward to the steam gala at the end of the month hope the weathers good. It looks a great line up, triple headed goods train hopefully. Thomas

At last the tamper has started to eliminate the problem on the track by Podmores Mill so hopefully the speed restriction will finally be lifted. Several other places have had hundreds of tonnes of ballast dropped ready for tamping, the south of Cheddleton Tunnel being the main one. I read on another website that the part restored Shark Van has been used to level the dropped ballast which should have been interesting. The OAP gang will be at a loss as to what to do when its completed perhaps they'll take a well earned rest. The speed restriction has created an extra excuse for DMU drivers to accelerate in the valley on the Consall-Froghall section for some time now, but although it was interesting, I think we'll all welcome the return of 25mph running on that section!
I believe that the "south of Cheddleton tunnel" you refer to actually includes the full section from the level crossing at Ched up to the tunnel.
You are right about the brakevan being used. This was the first time and I would hope to hear of them using it again. I was listening to the owner at the weekend and the van isn't a shark (which weigh 20 tons) its an Oyster, weighing in at only 16 tons. These are much rarer wagons with (as far as I know) only 2 in preservation. The other being at the East Lancs if you were wondering.
You must be very pleased with this news Thomas, you've often commented on the pace at which the track renewal south of Consall has been done at!
And as for the lack of projects, well...you don't need to look far to see how many smaller things are on their waiting list, I'm sure we'll be seeing more improvements this year.

I hear that the OAP-Way are starting to change some of the sleepers on the track to Oakamoor, hope they do it PDQ before the Gala DMU. The track itself seems to be pretty smooth but there are places where the sleepers are in poor condition. Does anyone know how many have got to be changed and has any other work got to be done on the line. Well I suppose it'll keep them out of the way while the trains are running. Thomas
