Here's one for the 'learned' among you. I sent this pic of the 'yank' loco (taken on Sunday at Froghall) to my friend in Germany, who is a respected steam historian in that area of the world. He came back to say it was good to see the old 'rattlesnake' running on the line. He said "These american wd-locos had this as their nickname in continental europe because of the permanent rattle of their coupling bars". Is this also well-known nickname over here? I have never seen it mentioned myself.

I have never heard the name myself, but I can see where they got it from, it definitely has a distinctive clank "beat" to it.
Apart from the official names I've only heard it referred to as the "yank"
